Navigation and Propulsion

GPS Modules, Magnetometers, Barometers, Propellers, Navigation Lights, Telemetry Modules, and other related tech. 


🔹 Navigation Accessories

These help drones determine their position, orientation, and path:

1. GPS Modules

  • Purpose: Real-time location tracking, auto-return, waypoint navigation.
     
  • Examples:
     
    • u-blox Neo-M8N GPS
       
    • DJI GNSS modules
       

2. Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs)

  • Purpose: Measure acceleration, angular rate (pitch, roll, yaw).
     
  • Includes: Accelerometer + Gyroscope + sometimes Magnetometer
     

3. Magnetometers (Digital Compass)

  • Purpose: Heading reference, helps with orientation when GPS is limited.
     

4. Barometers (Pressure Sensors)

  • Purpose: Altitude estimation, used for altitude hold.
     

5. LIDAR & Ultrasonic Sensors

  • Purpose: Obstacle detection, terrain following, height estimation.
     

6. Optical Flow Sensors

  • Purpose: Stabilize hover and position without GPS (especially indoors).
     

7. RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) GPS

  • Purpose: Centimeter-level accuracy, useful for mapping & surveying.
     

🔹 Propulsion Accessories

These support the mechanical thrust and mobility of drones:

1. Brushless Motors

  • Purpose: Drive propellers, more efficient and durable than brushed motors.
     
  • Note: KV rating indicates RPM per volt (higher KV = faster rotation).
     

2. Electronic Speed Controllers (ESCs)

  • Purpose: Regulate the power to motors based on flight controller input.
     

3. Propellers

  • Types: Two-blade, three-blade, carbon fiber, plastic.
     
  • Considerations: Size, pitch, material, balance.
     

4. Motor Mounts and Arms

  • Purpose: Secure motors, absorb vibration.
     

5. Power Distribution Boards (PDBs)

  • Purpose: Distribute power from the battery to ESCs and other components.
     

6. Battery and Power Systems

  • Common Types: LiPo (Lithium Polymer), Li-Ion.
     
  • Accessories: Voltage sensors, smart battery monitors, balance chargers.
     

7. Cooling Systems

  • Purpose: Prevent overheating of motors and ESCs during extended flights.
     

🔹 Integrated Systems

1. Flight Controllers

  • Purpose: Central brain that controls all inputs/outputs for navigation & propulsion.
     
  • Popular Examples: Pixhawk, Betaflight, DJI Naza
     

2. Telemetry Modules

  • Purpose: Communicate data (position, speed, battery, etc.) to the ground station.
     

3. Navigation Lights / LEDs

  • Purpose: Orientation assistance, visual signaling.
